Sweet Water Birds of a Feather Book 2 eBook Lena North

Jiminella “Jinx” Sweetwater is a genius.
She’s a scholar, an inventor, hardworking and loyal, and well known in the scientific circles around the University in Prosper City.
Being smarter than everyone else might seem like a good thing, but it isn’t. At least, it isn’t to Jinx who has two friends, a small condo, and no life.
After a fight with her best friend Wilder, it just gets worse. Someone breaks into her home and when her parents show up in all their hippie-like glory, Jinx has had enough and escapes to a small village by the sea.
Suddenly, Jinx finds herself involved in village life, living with the unpleasant Mrs. Fratinelli and trying her best to juggle all the things that seem to end up on her plate. And then there’s calm, cool and gorgeous Dante – Snow’s boyfriend, who seems to see right through the shields Jinx has put up around herself, straight into her mind.

Her name is Jiminella Nixée Sweetwater, but everyone calls her Jinx. She’s a genius. Her intelligence level can’t even be measured on the existing charts, so Jinx cheated on the test when she was just ten years old. By cheating she ‘became’ just a regular genius. Her parents are free spirits and they like to travel around. As a result Jinx has been living on her own since she was fourteen. She has developed multiple programs, which makes her a target for the wrong people. Lately their threats have become more dangerous. Everybody wants a piece of the genius, but what if they’re after something else as well? When a mysterious crystal is being found on the property of Jinx's best friend, Wilder, Jinx is asked to examine this stone. A lab is being set up in a small town, so Jinx can work from there. The people in this town leave her alone, but when she rescues a local everybody is more than grateful. It turns out that Jinx is not the only person who has special abilities. What will happen when Jinx gets closer to the truth?
Jinx is so incredibly smart, but she's also socially awkward. She's familiar with almost any kind of subject, but simply dancing at a party is a challenge. Jinx is sweet and loyal and she’ll go to the end of the world for the people she loves. She comes across as someone who knows everything about anything, but she is still so innocent in a lot of ways. Her mind is always in overdrive and this makes her physically ill. I loved her immediately and I was relieved that she finally dared to ask for help.
Sweet water is the second book in the Birds of a Feather series. I didn’t read the first book, but I had no trouble connecting to this story straight away. Jinx pulled me in from the start with her brilliant mind and kind character. Lena North has written a unique story with interesting twists and turns. I had a hard time putting this book down. Lena North 's writing is honest and real and I could easily sympathize with the main characters. I will absolutely read the rest of the books in this series.
Sweet water is a fascinating story about learning how to cope with being special. It's a great choice for readers who love books with smart main characters. Even though this is the second book in a series it can perfectly be read as a standalone.

Sweet Water Birds of a Feather Book 2 eBook Lena North Reviews
Jiminella Nixée Sweetwater is a brilliant scientist, known for both her work and her difficult personality worldwide. A (now grown) child prodigy. And she's falling apart. Her agreement with Wilder (Book 1 in the Birds of a Feather Series by Lena North) has stretched her already overcommitted self, and none of her friends get this. Jinx, as she is known, uses this as the excuse she needs to find solitude at the private lab Wilder is having built, in the village of Marshes. A danger from her past returns, and strains her to the point of burning out. When she finally breaks, it is Dante who helps her through, despite Jinx's protestations. The entire village becomes friendly as Jinx begins to heal; to Jinx, without friends for most of her life, this is weird and confusingly wonderful. Her research begins to get results when her past catches up with her and endangers Dante and the entire village. I enjoyed this book in Lena North's series and really enjoyed Jinx's character changing as she develops in Sweet Water and furthers most of the other characters in Wilder in funny ways. How Jinx learns how not to fear Hawker, cracked me up. And Olly. Kind Olly, who's other name is Reaper. I am now anxious for the next book in series that comes out in June... Why does it have to be so long?
I suppose this book is considered YA, under a technicality. The main character is under age but she is more emancipated than anything and the ultimate example of independence so, for me, at least, this book is not YA.
I have not read the first book in this series. There were some elements of Sweetwater that were unclear to me as they must have been references from the first book. However, for the most part, I was able to understand this book...well enough.
"My name is Jiminella Nixee Sweetwater, but everyone calls me Jinx. I have two friends, a small condo, and no life. I'm a genius. I have a medical degree, but I've never practiced, so I don't call myself a doctor. I have also not finished my engineering degree. " Jinx has been on her own since she was 12 years old. She describes her parents are free spirits and happiest when they are gone on their long trips selling things at local flea markets.
With the promise she made to Wilder, Jinx heads off to Marshes to work on the stone. While there, she makes friends with a local guy. He is stung by a water moccasin and that was pretty exciting to read about. Jinx was able to save the day given her medical training. This helped others in the town accept her and from here, the book opens up with a better understanding of Jinx.
She meets Dante and the two strike up a friendship. He holds a huge secret and Jinx helps him make some big decisions. Wilder and her group come and go throughout the story. I didn't understand some of the references made from and about these characters. While in the Marshes, Jinx lives with Mrs. Fratinelli. She is Wilder's step grandmother.
I didn't understand the reference to birds.
Jinx doesn't get much work done concerning the stone. Jinx ends up finding out a lot about herself and with the help from Dante, she puts her needs first. She also finds out about other people and clears up assumptions that have been made. The book ends with a mystery being solved and Jinx learning more about herself.
Jinx's character was okay for me. I really wasn't able to connect with her. She does come off as a jerk sometimes but I don't think she really tries to be offensive. She hides a lot inside. She is vulnerable to others and she hates showing that sides to people. As the book goes on, the reader comes to see her insecurities and why. The author shows the human side of Jinx in this book.
Jinx wasn't my favorite character ever. I didn't care for her attitude. Her abrasiveness got old. She tried too hard to be the tough girl but was then okay with it when someone swooped in to take care of her.
Typically, geniuses come off as awkward and socially inept. Jinx had her moments but for the most part she was none of these things. Also, I felt like the character gravitated towards men. Men seemed to find her attractive because she seemed to date and was hit on several times in this book but was dumped or ignored shortly after because they assumed she was too uppity for them. Then again, she admits that she does't have any trouble finding guys but is socially awkward. So which one is it?
Dante is the hero of the book and he was strange for me. I appreciated the friendship the author created for the characters but I didn't love that he just took control over Jinx. I can't believe this didn't bother her.
The book has some serious grammatical errors and sentence structure issues. Many misplaced words and inconsistencies and the ending was way too long.
Overall, the language in this book is atrocious. I wouldn't let my young adult read it, nor do I want to continue on in the series. There was a lot of telling and less showing when it came to Jinx. Dante's gift was useful but what's the reason for his gift? I saw him as a controlling person rather than a protector and sexy man. For me, the mystery to the book was random. The idea sort of came out of no where. I wasn't able to connect dots or anything, I was told what happened and why. Jinx's relationship with her parents was strange for me. She seemed to love them but not respect them and Dante treated them very poorly. I wasn't impressed with her parents but I disliked how others treated them more. A better read for an older, non teen, adults who enjoy paranormal elements to a story. The romance was slow to come and not very well done. There is little sexual reference, which is good but the language was awful. Really, I wouldn't recommend this book.
Content horrid language, violence.
I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
