In the remote fields of North Dakota in 1966 a questioning college student’s search for answers about America’s involvement in the Vietnam War leads him into a world of intrigue and danger. After discovering two mysterious strangers posing as farmers, he is consumed by the need to know the story of their dark past during World War II and the reason for their presence in America. With the help of a beautiful, enigmatic stranger he uncovers their secrets, but in his search for clarity he discovers that most of history is recorded in shades of gray. I love historically based books. This one is a very good one. While the characters are conglomerates of individuals they are believable and the history is viable. I enjoyed reading the moral dilemmas posed about Vietnam and others. In my life I have had the fortune to meet a woman that grew up in Nazi Germany and married an American Military Press serviceman during the Berlin airlift. My first question was "how did the People back Hitler". This book touched that subject also. Thought provoking book. Thank you!

This well researched saga of a 1960's midwestern small town boy who happens upon a farm couple whose 1940's Nazi SS past embroils him in their story. This book is a little bit William Kent Kreuger, with its appreciation of midwestern life and hunting sports, and a little bit John le Carre, with its intrigue. Why was this couple plunked down in the middle of North Dakota, and how? And just how does this story end?
Historical fiction at its best! I especially enjoyed the section "Kurt and Erika's Story." The couple's intriguing love story is well developed. Compelling descriptions of 1937 Nuremberg and its Rally captured the fanfare and fervor of the Nazi Movement. Other strong, vivid images of WWII included the horror and brutality on the Eastern Front.

An engaging book, well worth reading.
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this story when I first started reading it, but it turned out to be a great telling of a German couple with a Nazi background found living in the US after WWII and how they got here. It's a great narrative of the history of the Third Reich and their role in the war told through the eyes of a character who rises through their ranks after being indoctrinated as a young boy. Good stuff!
Turns out I was as fascinated by the background information about Hitler Youth and the condition of soldiers on the eastern front as I was by the story. The impeccable research really charged up my interest. I thought I knew about World War II but finding myself actually embedded in it in this book -- I really had known nothing at all and I was often surprised by my reactions.

There were so many areas that resonated having grown up in North Dakota and knowing people just like the characters, pheasant and duck-hunting relatives, what my folks said about WWII, even decisions that friends and I had to make in the 60's during the Vietnam War. I just wish my Dad was still alive to talk to about this book.
It was a true pleasure to read. The two main characters are so well developed, not a simple fact if you take into account that they appear in different time frames through the novel. The big question of how the land of Beethoven could bring us the Third Reich is presented through the eyes of a teenager that just can't escape the spell, later on the war scenes are vivid full of the horror and avoiding the glorification of combat. I wont tell more to avoid any spoils, if you read it, hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
While I'm about 70% finished, it is clear that the dashing hero finally starts to struggle with his conscience. Having been stationed over there, I always thought that people became so brain-washed, they submitted totally to the charismatic Adolf and believed whatever he told them.

Have been thinking about the Sandusky child abuse tragedy for months, and in the context of the way the German people accepted Nazi principles. Individuals were simply shunned (or exterminated) if the questioned the Reich.

Yet, when one looks at the Catholic Church scandals, and the Penn State issues, we really see the same thing. People are so indoctrinated by such as protecting the church, and protecting Penn State, and they have so much invested, and believe so much in the greater good of the cherished institution, they are willing to look the other way when they see something abhorrent, almost subliminally, because of the greater good of saying nothing. In some cases, saying something in that culture is akin to being a whistle blower, and one puts their very life in danger. What if the local authorities don't follow through, and come back to quite the source? Yet I believe it isn't the threat of retaliation, but the total commitment and belief in the institution that makes it unthinkable to 'see' that the damage to a few really is of greater consequence than the that institution (be it the Nazis theology, the Church, or Penn State).

Point is that Patriot Acts presents some very deep soul-searching and a glimpse of Nazi thinking, and especially self examination after the war started turning south for Germany. I believe some of the same psychologies are at play in the case of Sandusky and PSU. When news commentators ask, "...why didn't you do more?""" , they don't appear to understand how the magnitude of the institution is all-encompassing and all-imposing to those under the respective spells. I suspect many would nearly die for good ole PSU, just like the Reich...

Anyway, I am enjoying the book and a peak at the entire psychology of the Waffen SS officer as the war winds down and he enters his Rennassaince.
At times the characters and dialogue were both a little stuffy perhaps humdrum. But all in all it was a good story reasonably well told and an enjoyable read. If you can work through a couple of slow spots, it will definitely be worth while. Special Kudos to the authors for the great research they did in preparing to write. Their hard work definitely shows! Also thank you for providing links to several of your sources which I have used for my own education.
